Children's Hour is a program for preschoolers ages 3-5, held on Wednesdays from 10:30am to 11:30am, September through November and January through May. The Adult Coloring Club meets every first and third Wednesday of each month from 5-6:30 PM

“You are invited to attend this free program, designed as a quiet time for adults to enjoy a relaxing activity,” said a library spokesperson. “Coloring is not just for children these days. Adult coloring books have become quite popular. A story on cnn.com points out that ‘coloring has the therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus, or bring about more mindfulness. Like meditation, coloring allows the brain to switch off other thoughts and focus.’”

StoryTails  3:30 PM - 4:30 PM  Children Services

                    StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs. 
This drop-in program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading.  Each child reads to a dog for about 15 minutes with the dog's handler sitting nearby to give reading assistance if necessary.  All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International. At the end of the reading session, each child will receive a bookmark with a picture of the dog that they read to.  This program provides a great opportunity for kids who need to work on reading skills and would like the opportunity to read to an animal.

HomeSchoolers @ the Library typically meets on the first Friday of the month September- November and January- May. Our volunteer presenters offer a wide variety of enrichment programs for home school children and their families.

Today's program is an official Maryland STEM Festival event. The Deep Creek Lake State Park Discovery Center will present their Scales and Tales program.Join us to meet some of the Discovery Center’s animal ambassadors while learning the story of how they came to be in their care.

The Ruth Enlow Library and Garrett County Family Support Services will co-host this teen sensory and social event. This interactive, sensory friendly program will include activities specifically designed for teens that provide adaptive experiences based on multiple learning styles. The program will provide an opportunity for teens to relax, hang out and have fun, and participate in games and a craft. Video gaming will be available after the program for the teens to enjoy.

StoryTails  4:30 PM - 5:30 PM  Children's/Teens
Branch: Grantsville 

The Grantsville Library will hold StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs on the second Monday of each month.

This program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading. Each child reads to a dog for 15 – 20 minutes, with the dog’s handler sitting nearby to give reading assistance if necessary. All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International. No registration is required, and parents are asked to remain at the library while their child is reading. The program will not take place on days when the Garrett County schools have scheduled holiday closures are closed or dismissed early due to inclement weather.

The Ruth Enlow Library and Our Town Theatre are co-hosting a World War I Canteen to honor Garrett County’s veterans on Saturday, November 11, from 2 – 4 p.m. at the theatre. As 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the United States entering WWI, the event will feature keynote speaker Matt Borders on the topic of “The First Air War: The Men and Flying Machines of World War One.” Borders is an historian and ranger at Monocacy National Battlefield in Frederick, Maryland who has researched WWI extensively and will invite questions after his audiovisual presentation. Those wishing to attend should contact Our Town Theatre at www.ourtowntheatre.org or call 301-334-5640 and leave a message. This event is free and includes refreshments.

The canteen will begin with a Presentation of the Colors by the American Legion’s Color Guard, followed by military service songs to honor each branch of the armed forces. Venessa Stacy will direct the reading of letters sent home by Garrett County soldiers serving in World War I. Jill Craig, Digitization Librarian at Western Maryland Regional Library and Coordinator of the Western Maryland Historical Library (WHILBR), will give a brief overview of WHILBR’s digital collections and how to access them. The event will conclude with period songs played by Judy Bertsch.

The Bayeux Tapestry  6:00 PM - 7:30 PM  Adult Services

Join us for a lecture about the Bayeux Tapestry, which is a very old embroidery stitched over 900 years ago to commemorate the battle of Hastings.  Dolores Andrew, artist and designer, will share details about this embroidery, which she examined on a visit to the town of Bayeux.  She will share observations about the stitches, the central characters, and the 11th century world that created this 230 foot long masterpiece.

Young Readers' Book Club is a book discussion group for children in grades 6 and up. Programs are held on the third Tuesday of every month from September through November and January through May.
 
You must be pre-registered to attend this program.
 
Members will be provided with books that they will read and discuss with the group. Meetings include activities and snacks.

Lego Club is designed for children ages 4 and up and features free building time with lots of building bricks. Children are encouraged to build a creation based on a new theme each month. Staff may photograph and/or display completed builds in the library.

Lego Club typically meets on the fourth Monday of the month from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and registration is required.

A children's program designed especially for babies and toddlers (children birth to 36 months).  LapSit is a special program that incorporates singing, rhymes, stories, and other activities that will entertain and stimulate children’s language skills.  A parent or caregiver must stay and participate with the child for the program.

The Accident Library will hold Children's Story Time on Tuesdays Sept-May (with some exceptions) from 11-12 PM. Children's Story Time is open to children ages 2-5. Join us for stories, crafts, and activities.

Kids Book Club is a book discussion group for children in grades 3 through 5.  Programs are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month from September through November and January through May.
 
You must be pre-registered to attend this program.
 
Students will be provided with books that they will read and discuss with the group.  They will also enjoy a craft or other fun activity and have a snack based on the themes relevant to the book selection for that month.

This month's book selection is El Deafo by Cece Bell
. Books will be given out our at our October meeting or can be picked up after the meeting at the circulation desk.

Our Homeschooler Series meets at Grantsville Library on the fourth Wednesday during the months of September, November, February and April. Our volunteer presenters offer a wide variety of enrichment programs for home school children and their families.

Step back in time with staff members from the Fort Necessity National Battlefield to learn about the lifestyles of local American Indians in the 1750s.

Enjoy an Evening of Adult Coloring at the Oakland Library

“You are invited to attend this free program, designed as a quiet time for adults to enjoy a relaxing activity,” said a library spokesperson. “Coloring is not just for children these days. Adult coloring books have become quite popular. A story on cnn.com points out that ‘coloring has the therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus, or bring about more mindfulness. Like meditation, coloring allows the brain to switch off other thoughts and focus.’”

The Adult Coloring Club meets in Oakland the fourth Wednesday of each month from 6-7:30 PM. Susanne looks forward to sharing this fun activity with you.
