Read Across America - Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss
6:15 PM - 7:45 PM
Children Services Branch: Oakland Come celebrate Read Across America and the birthday of Dr. Seuss with fun games and activities based on Dr. Seuss books, refreshments and a free book (book provided by Garrett County Education Association). Attendance is limited to the first 50 children who are pre-registered. Parents/caregivers should call Deb Spurrier at 301-334-3996 x 104 or send an email to deb.s@relib.net to register their children.
This year’s Oakland event will feature three rotations of activities lasting 20 minutes each, and a closing with refreshments. Each rotation will have a story theme based on a Dr. Seuss book, including “If I Ran the Circus” with tumbling instruction from Brenda’s Body Shop, “Yertle the Turtle” with a turtle program from Deep Creek Lake State Park Discovery Center, and “Cat in the Hat” with a fun hat craft.

LapSit is a special program that incorporates singing, rhymes, stories, and other activities that will entertain and stimulate children’s language skills. A parent or caregiver must stay with the child for the program.

Children Services Branch: Accident Accident Library This month we will have Maggie here with us for StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs. This program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading. Each child reads to a dog for 15-20 minutes with the dog's handler sitting nearby to give reading assistance if necessary. All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International. At the end of each reading session, each child will receive a bookmark with a picture of the dog that they read to. This program provides a great opportunity for kids who need to work on reading skills and would like the opportunity to read to an animal.

Young Readers' Book Club

Young Readers Club is a book discussion group for readers age nine through twelve. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from September through November and January through May.
You must be pre-registered to attend this program.
Students will be provided with books that they will read and discuss with the group. They will also enjoy a craft, game, or activity and a snack based upon themes relevant to the particular book selected for the program. If interested please contact Deb Spurrier at 301-334-3996 ext. 104.

Children Services Branch: Accident Accident Library All home-schooled children and teens are invited to participate in programs and activities at the Accident library on the third Thursday of the month, September through May.
On March 21st, home-school families or groups will present puppet shows for the enjoyment of the other home-schoolers. We have some puppets here you may use, and you know how to make them from the workshop in February. Let's see what you can do with them! Use your imaginations! Aim for a 5-10 minute show. See the librarians if you need a group to work with or if you need ideas.
