A children's program designed especially for babies and toddlers (children age three and under).  LapSit is a special program that incorporates singing, rhymes, stories, and other activities that will entertain and stimulate children’s language skills.  A parent or caregiver must stay with the child for the program.

Children will enjoy an hour of stories, crafts and activities on WEDNESDAYS from 11:00am - NOON. Birth - Age Eight are welcome to attend with an adult; the focus group is preschoolers age 3-5.Throughout this hour, children will build social, listening, vocabulary, & creative skills as well as letter and number recognition   =O)

Anyone interested in the game of chess is welcome to drop in between 5 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday through September.  If there is interest, we’ll continue it either year-round or April – October.  All skill levels are welcome.  We have seven chess sets available, or you can bring your own.  Come to watch, come to learn, come to practice, come to be challenged, and come to play!  If anyone has a timing clock, that might be interesting to bring along.

Story Tails  3:30 PM - 4:30 PM  Children Services

This month we will have Maggie here with us for StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs.  This program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading.  Each child reads to a dog for 15-20 minutes with the dog's handler sitting nearby to give reading assistance if necessary.  All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International. At the end of each reading session, each child will receive a bookmark with a picture of the dog that they read to.  This program provides a great opportunity for kids who need to work on reading skills and would like the opportunity to read to an animal!!

Join us at Oakland Library for a presentation by Katharine Kenny and Eleanor Randrup – co-authors of the book “Courageous Women of Maryland." This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Ruth Enlow Library and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is not required, but a courtesy call to the library is appreciated at 301-334-3996, ext. 117, or email bonnie@relib.net "Courageous Women of Maryland” focuses on eighteen of the state’s most influential and courageous women, past and present, including Dr. Alta Schrock of Grantsville. This educational book, which is appropriate for grades 4 – 8, takes a look at each woman's achievements and the courageous choices each made to realize success. The authors will discuss their research and stories associated with these women. They also will sell and sign copies of their books.

Young Readers Club is a book discussion group for readers age nine through twelve.  The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from September through November and January through May.
 
You must be pre-registered to attend this program.

National Book Festival Trip  6:30 AM  Adult Services

The Ruth Enlow Library invites you along on a bus trip with Schrock Tour & Charter to the 12th Annual National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, September 22. The trip is open to the public at a cost of $50 person, or $30 with a student ID, payable in full at the time of registration and non-refundable. The registration deadline is Saturday, September 8. To register, contact Georgie Dawson, administrative assistant at the Ruth Enlow Library, at 301-334-3996, ext. 106, and provide name, address, phone number, and number of reservations.

The chartered bus will depart the Oakland town parking lot at 6:30 a.m. the morning of September 22 and stop for pick-up at Delano’s Furniture Store (old IGA) in Accident at 7:00 a.m. The bus will leave Washington, D.C. that same day at 5:30 p.m. It will stop at Sideling Hill Rest Area en route to the festival and at the Golden Corral in Frederick for dinner on the return trip. Restrooms, TV, and VCR are available on the bus. No glass containers are permitted.
